Recovery Mural at the Shattuck Shelter
A pilot mural project took place at the Friends of the Shattuck Shelter in Jamaica Plain in July 2005 granting six homeless men the opportunity to engage in the artistic process. Led by artist Tova Speter, the men participated in a series of workshops brainstorming, designing, and painting a three-wall mural in the dining area of their shelter reflecting the theme of Recovery.
“This is the first time I ever worked on something where I saw a project through from beginning to completion.”
“I’ve gained the ability to give back something that will always be remembered.” Stanley, Participant
“Participation in the mural project instills feelings of accomplishment, direction and knowledge that by taking the necessary steps, [clients] can achieve [their] goals.”
Mary Nee, Executive Director of Friends of the Shattuck Shelter
