Formal painting and drawing issues of surface, light, color, tonality,
rhythm, and structure are integral to my work. The paintings have
a visceral, urban sensibility, reflective of both my New York roots
and early musical training.
I love lush, thickly applied oil paint and have found my way through
a variety of techniques of brushstrokes in order to achieve rich
surfaces. The underlying emotional components shift and vary as
my life moves along, but early visual and psychological events,
some remembered, most otherwise inaccessible to me other than through
the work, are repeated and reinvented. Dreams are my personal gold
mine, providing me with technical and aesthetic clues to be exploited,
developed, and realized.
